James Farmer Hall, formerly known as Trinkle Library and Trinkle Hall, was built in 1940 as the college’s library. The building was named in honor of Virginia Governor E. Lee Trinkle and his legislative support of the school and Virginia education. The former library, which was in the current Virginia Hall residence building, was deemed too overcrowded and needed to be moved. The construction of Trinkle Library cost around $250,000, and an addition was built onto the building in 1960.[1]Crawley, William. University of Mary Washington: A Centennial History, 1908-2008. Fredericksburg, VA: University of Mary Washington, 2008, pg. 53. A section of the former library is still intact in the building and can still be used by students as a study space. After Simpson Library was built in 1989, the hall was repurposed into classrooms. It currently houses the Department of Classics, Philosophy, and Religion; the Department of Mathematics; the Department of Computer Science; the Leidecker Center for Asian Studies; and formerly housed the College of Education’s Fredericksburg campus classes and the department’s offices. The name change of Trinkle Hall was proposed by the Campus Environment Presidential Ad Hoc Committee in 2019. The Ad Hoc Naming Committee and the University’s Board of Visitors decided on the name change of Trinkle Hall to James Farmer Hall in 2020. The official dedication ceremony was held in the fall of 2021.[2]“UMW Chooses New Names for Building: James Farmer Hall,” University of Mary Washington, accessed March 28, 2022, … Continue reading
